A one-page Foreign Ministry statement said that Pakistan's Interim High Commissioner Syed Haider Shah was summoned to the Foreign Ministry and informed of the government's decision. Foreign Ministry officials told him that the government of Pakistan had repeatedly informed the High Commission about the activities of the High Commission officials that their activities were not in line with diplomatic regulations.

The statement said that on the one hand, Pakistani diplomats were involved in activities which were not in line with the diplomatic privileges of the High Commission. On the other hand, Pakistan obstructed and intimidated Indian diplomats in Islamabad. The series began.

According to the statement, the attitude of Pakistan and its officials towards diplomats and consular officials is against the principles of the Vienna Convention and bilateral agreements. The two countries recalled their high commissioners after the Pulwama attack last year.

A Pakistani diplomat in Delhi told the BBC that working in Delhi is a very difficult task for Pakistani diplomats. He added that after each such incident, the situation becomes more tense and the environment more difficult.

India has decided to reduce the staff of the High Commission to 50 per cent at a time when two of its Islamabad High Commission officials have returned from recent detentions in Pakistan.

The statement said, "The recent abduction of two Indian officials at gunpoint in Islamabad and the gross mistreatment of them reflects the extent to which Pakistan has strayed from the diplomatic path." Both these officials have come to India and given details of the barbaric treatment of Pakistani agencies.

A few weeks earlier, India had ordered two Pakistani officials to leave the country on charges of espionage.

India-Pakistan relations have been bad for a long time. The decision to reduce diplomatic staff in the High Commission is a clear indication of the already strained relations.

The government has taken this drastic step at a time when India is facing severe border clashes with China. Last week, China killed 20 Indian soldiers in the Gulwan Valley. The stalemate persists in both countries. The opposition has accused Prime Minister Modi's government of weakening ahead of China.

Analysts believe that the Modi government is under tremendous pressure after its secession from China. She wants to send a message to the people who are shocked by the deaths of Indian soldiers by taking a tough decision against Pakistan that this is a strong government and can take strong action.
